Guberniya () (also gubernia, guberniia, gubernya) was a major administrative subdivision of the Imperial Russia, usually translated as government, governorate, or province. A guberniya was ruled by a governor or (gubernator), a word borrowed from either Latin gubernator or Greek kybernates.
