A cotyledon (; "seed leaf" from Greek: κοτυληδών kotylēdōn, from κοτύλη kotýlē "cup, bowl") is a significant part of the embryo within the seed of a plant. Upon germination, the cotyledon may become the embryonic first leaves of a seedling.
