In horology, a remontoire is a secondary winding mechanism that's periodically re-wound from the main source of energy, such as a mainspring. In precision clocks it's used to regulate the force that drives the clock's timekeeping mechanism. In turret clocks it serves to separate the large forces needed to drive the hands from the modest forces needed to drive the escapement which keeps the pendulum swinging.
