Michael Thomas Ganci was born in 1945 in Brooklyn, N.Y. He lived in New York until 1967, graduating from Long Island University with a B.A. in Cultural Anthropology. His father had been an amateur boxer which spurred his interest in combative arts. He began his karate instruction in his early teens with other students of New York's Chinatown Dojo.
