An arepa's a bread made of corn originating from the northern Andes in South America, and which has now spread to other areas in Latin America (for example Costa Rica, and the Dominican Republic, where it's now popular). It's similar to the Mesoamerican tortilla and even more to the Salvadoran pupusa.
